The University of Iowa, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) and Office of Performing Arts and Engagement, has a Costume Fabricator
position available in the Performing Arts Production Unit serving Dance/Opera. This is under the University classification title of
Fabrication Specialist (PEB2). This is a full time Professional and Scientific position with a salary of $48,000 to commensurate.

This position will serve as the Costume Fabricator for the Department of Dance, the School of Music Opera Department, and/or Theatre. The
production schedule includes two Dance concerts, eight to ten Dance events, and two Opera productions per year while also providing support
to numerous student and classroom projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • All aspects of costume fabrication
    including measurements, fitting costumes, patternmaking, draping, garment construction, alterations, and tasks related to completion of
    costumes.
  • Oversee Dance Department costume inventory, including checkout/maintenance for student, classroom, and Space Place
    Theatre projects.
  • Dyeing, craft work, costume shop organization, equipment maintenance and stock inventory upkeep
  • Responsible for facilitating effective, healthy, and productive production environments in collaboration with the artists, faculty, and
    staff.

Education Required:

  • BS/BA/BFA degree
    in theatrical production for theatre, dance and/or opera or equivalent educational and professional experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in major university or professional costume shop
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently from costume renderings, drawings, and sketches with only verbal instructions from the
    Costume Manager.
  • Working experience in costume construction including, draping, pattern creation, cutting, sewing, wigs, and
    costume crafts.
  • Detail oriented while demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated
    and an independent thinker who consistently meets deadlines, resolves conflicting priorities, and has outstanding interpersonal skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in the creation of Millinery.
  • Ability to mix dye and
    alter color with the use of a commercial dye vat.
  • Experience in the creation of dance costumes.
  • Experience with student
    performers and/or crews in an academic shop or production environment.
  • Sewing machine repair and maintenance.
